STRIVING FOR A BETTER VILLAGE AT MAGNOLIA SPRINGS
In 1950, a group of women in Magnolia Springs came together with a shared purpose: “to encourage more abundant living as we cultivate our gardens and friendships.” That first year, 50 members joined, gathering on the fourth Wednesday morning of each month to socialize and enjoy one another’s company. Early activities included hat shows, picnics, Christmas parties, and an annual flower show. The inaugural show drew 500 visitors, and within just a few years, attendance grew to more than 700.
As the club evolved, meetings transitioned from private homes to the Community Hall, where members continued to enjoy fellowship, refreshments, and occasional guest speakers who shared gardening knowledge and inspiration. Throughout the years, the club remained deeply committed to its motto, “striving for a better village.” Members supported local schools by providing needed supplies, raised funds to plant beloved oak trees, and contributed to the well-being of the local veterans’ home.
Time and again, the Garden Club has played a vital role in preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the area now known as the Arboretum. When access to the Springs was closed, the club stepped forward, voting to assume responsibility for the park. Through dedicated fundraising and volunteer efforts, members transformed the space, ultimately earning the prestigious Gulf Guardian Award for their work on the memorial gardens and walkway. Several amazing Art & Jazz festivals featuring Stig Marcussen were a resounding success, culminating in a big final Wine & Jazz Festival, raised necessary funds for the improvement efforts. Following hurricane devastation, the club once again undertook the challenging task of restoring the gardens, supported by an elegant annual Meet ‘Em in the Arboretum fall extravaganza.
Recently, the club initiated its partnership with the local grade school, which we hope will flourish. Members provided caterpillar-to-butterfly learning kits to 41 classrooms, helping students understand the pollinator life cycle. We also hosted an annual spring visit to the Arboretum & Gardens, where children enjoy games, snacks, and a visit with the Easter Bunny. And, we are excited to begin participating in the Smokey Bear Project with the school children.
Through all of these efforts, the Garden Club remains devoted to its founding vision — cultivating both gardens and friendships. Each month members gather not only to learn and serve but to connect, ensuring their legacy of community care continues to grow.
Heavenly Father, the Creator of all things, we thank Thee for the beauty of the world.
We thank Thee for the play of Thy power in wind and sky, blossom and fruit, and gently flowing stream. We thank Thee for gardens wherein we may be
co-workers with Thee.
May we tend our gardens with reverence and care, and wilt Thou, O God, weed from our hearts all that is unlike Thee.
Then, shall we bring forth the fruits of the Spirit and give Thee the praise in Jesus's name.
AMEN
